Description

The Malawi Sand Diver (Dimidiochromis compressiceps) is a fascinating and distinctive cichlid native to Lake Malawi in Africa. Recognised for its sleek, elongated body and unique sand-dwelling behaviour, this species often displays a shimmering silver or bluish hue with subtle iridescence. Typically reaching about 15-20cm in length, the Sand Diver is a semi-aggressive fish known for its active swimming and foraging habits. Its slender form and striking appearance make it a captivating addition to an advanced hobbyist’s Malawi setup.

Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 250 litres is recommended for a pair or small group, with a sandy substrate and plenty of rocks and caves to mimic their natural habitat. Maintain water temperature between 24-26°C, pH around 7.8-8.6, and ensure excellent filtration and stable water conditions. The tank should have ample swimming space and hiding spots to reduce territorial disputes.

Compatibility & Incompatibility:
They are best kept with other large, semi-aggressive Malawi cichlids such as Tropheus or Julidochromis. Avoid docile or small species that may be bullied or eaten. They can be territorial, especially during breeding, so providing plenty of space and hiding spots is essential.

Best Feeding Regime:
Carnivorous; thrive on high-quality pellets or flakes formulated for carnivores, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, krill, and small fish. Offer multiple small feedings per day and only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water quality issues.
