General Information:

The Cynotilapia Afra “Yellow Top” is a vibrant Mbuna species native to the rocky shoreline zones of Lake Malawi. Known for its electric blue body and striking yellow dorsal fin, this small but eye-catching cichlid adds dynamic colour and energy to any African cichlid setup. Active and moderately aggressive, especially towards similar-looking males, it thrives in aquariums that replicate its natural rock-laden habitat.

Species Overview:

  • Common Name: Yellow Top Afra

  • Scientific Name: Cynotilapia afra

  • Origin: Lake Malawi (varies by collection point, e.g., Cobue, Jalo Reef)

  • Diet: Omnivorous (primarily herbivorous)

  • pH Range: 7.8–8.6

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

  • Max Size: ~10 cm (4 inches)

  • Tank Size: Minimum 100 litres (for a group in a species or community tank)

Water Quality:

Yellow Top Afra cichlids prefer hard, alkaline water, consistent with the mineral-rich conditions of Lake Malawi. Stable temperatures and high filtration with regular water changes are crucial to their health. A rocky aquascape with caves and vertical rock faces helps support their natural behaviours and territorial needs.

Feeding:

In the wild, these cichlids graze on algae and small organisms from rocks. In captivity, feed a diet rich in spirulina flakes or pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach. Avoid high-protein or meaty foods like bloodworms, which may cause bloating or Malawi bloat.

Tank Mates:

Due to their territorial nature, especially males, it’s best to house them with other similarly aggressive Mbuna species or keep them in a larger tank with enough space and rockwork to define territories. Avoid mixing them with timid or slow-moving fish. A ratio of one male to several females reduces aggression and encourages natural breeding behaviour.

Sexing:

Males display brighter colouration with more pronounced yellow in the dorsal fin and often deeper blues in the body, especially during courtship or territorial displays. Females are typically duller, with more muted blue-gray tones and a less vibrant dorsal stripe. Juveniles can be difficult to sex until maturity.

Breeding:

Cynotilapia Afra are maternal mouthbrooders. The female will incubate the eggs in her mouth for about 21 days, after which she releases free-swimming fry. Provide plenty of hiding spaces for fry, or remove the female to a separate tank for safer rearing.

Maximum Size and Longevity:

These cichlids reach around 10 cm in length and can live up to 8 years with proper care. Their bold personality and unique colouration make them a long-lasting highlight in any African cichlid tank.

Fun Fact:

Different geographic variants of Cynotilapia afra exhibit dramatically different coloration—making them a favorite among Lake Malawi cichlid enthusiasts who enjoy building location-specific tanks.
