General Information:

The Electric Yellow Cichlid is a striking freshwater fish admired for its bright yellow body and contrasting black-tipped fins. Native to Lake Malawi, this species is one of the most popular African cichlids due to its vibrant colouration and relatively peaceful temperament. With proper care and tank conditions, it thrives in home aquariums, adding a bold splash of colour to any setup.

Species Overview:

  • Species: Labidochromis caeruleus
  • Common Name: Electric Yellow Cichlid, Yellow Lab
  • Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
  • Diet: Omnivorous
  • pH Range: 7.5–8.5
  • Temperature: 24°C–28°C (75°F–82°F)
  • Max Size: 10–13 cm (4–5 inches)
  • Tank Size: Minimum 40 gallons

Water Quality:

Electric Yellow Cichlids thrive in alkaline, well-oxygenated water with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5. Strong filtration, regular water changes, and a rocky aquascape with plenty of hiding spaces help maintain their health. A sandy substrate with caves replicates their natural Lake Malawi environment, reducing stress and promoting natural behaviour.

Feeding:

As omnivores, Electric Yellow Cichlids require a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based flakes, and occasional protein sources like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Too much protein can cause digestive issues, so plant-based foods should form a significant part of their diet. Feed them twice daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes to maintain water quality.

Tank Mates:

Electric Yellow Cichlids are among the more peaceful Mbuna cichlids, making them compatible with other moderately aggressive Lake Malawi cichlids. Good tank mates include species like Acei Cichlids, Rusty Cichlids, and other non-aggressive Mbunas. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive cichlids or much smaller, timid fish that may be bullied.

Sexing:

Males and females share similar yellow colouration, but males may develop a slightly darker black stripe along their fins. Dominant males tend to have a more intense yellow hue and exhibit more territorial behaviour. Females are usually slightly smaller and may appear less vibrant.

Breeding:

Electric Yellow Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning females carry fertilised eggs in their mouths for about three weeks until the fry are ready to swim freely. Providing rocky structures encourages natural breeding behaviour. Once released, the fry can be fed finely crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp for healthy growth.

Maximum Size and Longevity:

These cichlids grow up to 13 cm (5 inches) and can live between 6 to 10 years with proper care. Maintaining stable water conditions, a well-structured tank, and a varied diet ensures longevity and vibrant colouration.

Fun Fact:

The Electric Yellow Cichlid’s bright yellow colouration makes it one of the most recognisable and sought-after cichlids, often chosen as a centrepiece fish in African cichlid aquariums.
