Yellowfin Mloto Cichlid
The Yellow Fin Mloto (Otopharynx tetraspilus) is a stunning Malawi cichlid that boasts a brilliant blue body accented by vibrant yellow fins. Growing up to 16cm, this peaceful species brings both beauty and balance to any aquarium. Its calm demeanour makes it an excellent companion in a community of other non-aggressive cichlids, creating a harmonious and colourful display. With its eye-catching colours and serene presence, the Yellow Fin Mloto is a perfect addition for aquarists looking to elevate their tank with a species that is both captivating and easy to care for.

Gender Inequalities
Males are known for their vibrant coloration, particularly their metallic blue bodies and bright yellow fins, which become even more intense during breeding periods. The striking colour contrast is a key feature in attracting mates and establishing dominance. Females, in contrast, are much more subdued in colour, often appearing silvery or brownish with faint patterning. They lack the vivid blue and yellow hues that males display.

Tank Temperament and Compatible Tank Companions
The Otopharynx tetraspilus, or Yellow Fin Mloto, is a relatively peaceful cichlid compared to many other Malawi species, making it easier to integrate into a mixed community tank. However, like many cichlids, males can become territorial, especially during breeding, so careful tank planning is necessary to maintain harmony. The Yellow Fin Mloto is known for its calm demeanour and moderate aggression, particularly when not breeding. It’s much less confrontational than many aggressive cichlids, which makes it a good fit for community tanks. Males will become more territorial during breeding, displaying vibrant colours and staking out specific areas of the tank. However, their aggression is typically confined to breeding behaviours, and they are not overly hostile outside of this context.
