Description
The Modoko White Lip (Placidochromis phenochilus) is a striking Malawi cichlid renowned for its vibrant coloration and distinctive white lips that contrast beautifully with its body. Native to Lake Malawi, it exhibits a stunning array of colours, including shades of blue, yellow, and iridescent hues, making it a prized addition for Malawi cichlid enthusiasts. Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 150 litres is recommended for a pair or small group, with sandy substrate and plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming space. Maintain water temperature between 24-26°C, pH around 7.8-8.6, and ensure stable filtration and water quality. They prefer soft to moderately hard water to mimic their natural habitat.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Modoko White Lip fish are best kept with other peaceful or semi-aggressive Malawi cichlids such as Lethrinops or Aulonocara. Avoid overly aggressive or much larger species that might bully or outcompete them. During breeding, they may become territorial, so providing hiding spots is essential.
Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; they thrive on high-quality flakes and pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and Daphnia. They also enjoy vegetable matter such as spirulina. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water pollution.
