Description

The Mbenji Koningsi Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara koningsi) is a distinctive species endemic
to the rocky outcrops of Mbenji Island in Lake Malawi. They are renowned for their vibrant
coloration and fascinating behaviours, making them a highly sought-after addition to
aquariums.

Gender Inequalities
The Mbenji Koningsi Peacock Cichlid (Aulonocara koningsi) exhibits striking sexual
dimorphism, with males displaying vibrant and iridescent colours compared to the more
subdued females. Mature males are known for their brilliant electric blue hue, which covers
most of the body, including the head and fins. This coloration becomes especially vivid
during breeding periods as part of mate attraction. Their dorsal fin is adorned with a bright
yellow edge, and their anal fin may show similar yellow or orange highlights, often
accompanied by egg spots. Females, in contrast, exhibit a more cryptic gray or brownish
coloration, which aids in camouflage against the rocky lakebed. Both males and females
have a streamlined body shape, typical of cichlids, with well-defined vertical bars along their
sides, although these are more pronounced in females. The overall morphology, including
large eyes and slightly pointed snouts, is typical of the Aulonocara genus, which is
specialized for detecting prey in the sand and rocky crevices of their environment.

Tank Temperament and Compatible Tank Companions
The Mbenji Koningsi Peacock Cichlid generally displays a peaceful temperament compared
to other cichlid species, especially within a well-maintained aquarium environment. However,
like many peacock cichlids, males can become territorial, particularly during breeding
periods, so it’s recommended to provide ample space with rocky hiding spots and caves to
diffuse aggression. Due to their calm disposition, they can also coexist with other medium-
sized peaceful fish as long as they share compatible water parameters and aren’t small
enough to be seen as prey. Providing a well-structured habitat with clear territories can help
maintain harmony among tank inhabitants.
