Description
General Information:
The Lionhead, often called the “Block Head” due to its distinctive, protruding head growth, is a popular fancy goldfish renowned for its rounded body and prominent head growth or wen. Originating from China, the Lionhead is a slow-growing, peaceful freshwater fish appreciated for its unique appearance and gentle nature. It typically reaches about 15-20cm in length and can live up to 10-15 years with proper care. Its broad, egg-shaped body and expressive eyes make it a charming centerpiece for a well-maintained tank.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is suitable for a single Lionhead, with a smooth substrate, gentle filtration, and plenty of space for swimming. Avoid sharp decorations that could damage its delicate wen. Maintain water temperature between 18-22°C, with pH around 6.5-7.5. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential, as they produce a fair amount of waste.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
They are peaceful and can be kept with other slow-moving, non-aggressive fish such as other fancy goldfish varieties. Avoid housing them with fin-nipping or aggressive fish, and steer clear of sharp or rough decorations that could damage their wen.
Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; feed high-quality goldfish pellets or flakes, supplemented with blanched vegetables like peas, spinach, or lettuce. Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or daphnia occasionally. Feed small amounts 2-3 times daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water quality issues.
