Description
The Blood Red Parrot (Symphysodon spp. x Ancistrus spp. hybrid) is a popular freshwater fish known for its vibrant, deep red colouration and distinctive, rounded body shape. Originating from hybridisation in Asia and the United States, it features a unique, compact form with a beak-like mouth and flowing fins, making it a striking addition to community tanks. Typically reaching about 15-18cm in length, the Blood Red Parrot is a semi-aggressive fish that thrives in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. Its peaceful nature, combined with vivid colour, makes it a favourite among aquarists.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 150 litres is recommended for a small group, with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5-7.4), and temperatures around 24-26°C. Use smooth substrate and include plants, caves, or driftwood to provide hiding places. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to keep water quality high.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Blood Red Parrots are compatible with peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid fin-nipping or very aggressive fish, as well as larger species that might see them as prey. They can be territorial during breeding but generally coexist peacefully.
Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; offer high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina. Feed twice daily, only what they can eat within a few minutes to prevent water pollution.
