Description
General Information:
The Bolivian Butterfly is a peaceful and colourful freshwater fish perfect for community aquariums. Its stunning blend of yellow, red, and gray hues makes it a favourite among aquarists. Native to slow-moving rivers in South America, this cichlid is hardy and easy to care for.
Scientific Name:
Mikrogeophagus altispinosus
Water Quality:
These cichlids prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH of 6.5–7.5 and temperatures of 24–28°C (75–82°F). Regular water changes and a gentle filter are essential for keeping them healthy. Adding plants and driftwood helps mimic their natural environment. It’s crucial to maintain stable water parameters. Sudden changes in pH can stress these fish.
Feeding:
Bolivian Butterflies enjoy a mixed diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. While a varied diet is important, avoid overfeeding. Overfeeding can lead to water quality issues and health problems. Feed them small amounts 2–3 times daily to maintain their energy and vibrant colours. Including vegetable-based foods supports overall health.
Tank Mates:
These peaceful fish coexist well with other non-aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid housing them with large, aggressive fish that may intimidate or harm them. A tank with plenty of plants and hiding spots helps reduce stress.
Sexing:
Males are often larger and more colourful than females, with extended fin rays. During breeding, the difference in size and coloration becomes more pronounced. Patience is needed when sexing juveniles, as their features develop over time.
Breeding:
Bolivian Butterflies are substrate spawners, laying eggs on flat surfaces or in shallow depressions. Both parents actively guard the eggs and fry, making them fascinating to watch during breeding. A calm environment with hiding spots encourages successful spawning.
Maximum Size and Longevity:
This species grows to about 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm) and can live for 5–7 years with proper care. Their manageable size makes them ideal for medium-sized tanks. However, a larger aquarium with ample floor space is even better, as it helps minimise any mild territorial behaviour these fish might display.
Fun Fact:
Bolivian Butterflies are known for their graceful swimming and playful behaviour. They often interact with their surroundings and even “greet” their owners during feeding time!
