Description

General Information:

The Copadichromis Azureus, often called the Azureus Cichlid, is a stunning freshwater fish from Lake Malawi in Africa. Its electric blue coloration, especially in males, makes it a favourite for brightening up aquariums. Known for its peaceful demeanour, this fish is suitable for cichlid enthusiasts of all experience levels.

Scientific Name:

Copadichromis azureus

Water Quality:

This species thrives in clean, well-maintained water with a pH of 7.8–8.6 and a temperature range of 24–28°C (75–82°F). A sandy substrate, plenty of open swimming areas, and rocky caves help mimic its natural environment. Consistent water changes and good filtration are essential for its health.

Feeding:

Azureus Cichlids are omnivorous, enjoying a diet of high-quality pellets, spirulina, and occasional treats like brine shrimp or daphnia. Feed them twice daily in small portions to avoid overfeeding. A balanced diet enhances their vibrant colours and overall vitality.

Tank Mates:

These cichlids are peaceful compared to other Lake Malawi species and do well with other non-aggressive cichlids or fish of similar size. Avoid housing them with overly territorial or aggressive species. Providing sufficient space and hiding spots reduces stress and promotes harmony.

Sexing:

Males display striking metallic blue bodies with darker vertical bars, while females are more subdued with silver or grey tones. Juveniles may look similar until they mature. Males often exhibit brighter colours when ready to breed.

Breeding:

Copadichromis Azureus are maternal mouthbrooders, with females carrying the eggs and fry in their mouths for protection. A flat rock or sandy bottom encourages spawning behaviour. For best results, provide a calm, separate breeding tank to protect the fry.

Maximum Size and Longevity:

This species grows to about 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) and can live for up to 8–10 years with proper care. While a medium-sized tank may suffice, a larger aquarium with ample swimming space is ideal for their active nature. Providing a well-decorated habitat keeps them stress-free and healthy.

Fun Fact:

The Azureus Cichlid’s vibrant blue colouring becomes even more intense when males establish dominance or court a mate, making them a true showpiece in any aquarium!
