Description

General Information:

The Benga Sunshine Peacock is a dazzling freshwater fish known for its vibrant yellow and blue hues. Originating from the clear waters of Lake Malawi in Africa, this species brings a burst of colour to any aquarium. Its peaceful nature makes it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced hobbyists.

Scientific Name:

Aulonocara baenschi

Water Quality:

These cichlids thrive in water with a pH between 7.8 and 8.6 and a temperature of 25–28°C (77–82°F). Ensure the tank is well-filtered and has regular water changes to mimic their natural habitat. Clean, oxygen-rich water keeps them healthy and vibrant.

Feeding:

Benga Sunshine Peacocks enjoy a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods like brine shrimp, and the occasional vegetable-based flake. Avoid overfeeding and provide small meals twice a day. A balanced diet enhances their bright colours.

Tank Mates:

These peaceful fish do well with other non-aggressive cichlids and similar-sized tank mates. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species, as this may cause stress. Plenty of hiding spots and space reduce territorial disputes.

Sexing:

Males boast vibrant yellow bodies with striking blue accents, especially during the breeding season. Females, on the other hand, are more subdued with silver or grey tones. Juveniles can be tricky to sex until they mature.

Breeding:

Benga Sunshine Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders, meaning the female carries the eggs and fry in her mouth for protection. A flat surface or sandy substrate encourages spawning. Providing a separate breeding tank increases survival rates for fry.

Maximum Size and Longevity:

These cichlids typically reach 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) in length and can live up to 8 years with proper care. Their manageable size makes them suitable for medium to large aquariums.

Fun Fact:

The Benga Sunshine Peacock’s name comes from its resemblance to the glowing rays of sunshine! Males often display their brightest colours to impress females or establish dominance.
