Description
Rhoadesii (Labeotropheus rhoadesii) is a striking Malawi cichlid native to Lake Malawi in Africa. Known for its bold colours and distinctive body shape, it typically exhibits a vibrant yellow or orange body with black vertical bars and a prominent forehead hump. Reaching about 8-10cm in length, Rhoadesii is a semi-aggressive species that thrives in rocky, well-decorated tanks. Its active nature and striking appearance make it a popular choice among Malawi cichlid enthusiasts who can provide the right environment.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is suitable for a pair or small group, with plenty of rocky structures, caves, and hiding spots to mimic its natural habitat. Use sandy substrate, maintain water temperature between 24-26ยฐC, pH around 7.8-8.6, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and strong filtration are essential to keep water quality high.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Rhoadesii pairs well with other Malawi cichlids such as Lethrinops and Aulonocara that are similarly sized and semi-aggressive. Avoid housing them with overly peaceful or much larger fish, which they may bully or be bullied by. During breeding, territorial behaviour may increase, so ample hiding spaces are essential.
Best Feeding Regime:
Herbivorous; they prefer high-quality vegetable flakes, spirulina pellets, and algae wafers. Occasionally supplement with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp to enhance colouration and health. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes.
