Description
The Red Forest Jewel (Hemichromis lifalili), also known as the Red Jewel Cichlid, is a stunning freshwater fish renowned for its vibrant red and orange hues, accented by iridescent scales that shimmer under aquarium lighting. Originating from West Africa, particularly the Ivory Coast and Nigeria, this species adds bold colour and lively activity to community tanks. Adults typically reach around 10-12cm in length, with a robust, elongated body. Known for their territorial and semi-aggressive behaviour, they are best kept in pairs or small groups in well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is suitable for a pair, with sandy or fine gravel substrate and plenty of rocks, caves, and plants to create hiding places. Maintain water temperature between 24-28°C, pH around 6.5-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to keep water quality high, especially given their active nature.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
They are compatible with other semi-aggressive species such as larger tetras, barbs, or peaceful cichlids. Avoid keeping them with small, peaceful fish or overly aggressive species that may be bullied or outcompeted. During breeding, they can become territorial and aggressive, so providing ample space and hiding spots is crucial.
Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; they thrive on high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. They also enjoy vegetable matter such as spirulina wafers. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes, to prevent water quality issues.
