Description
Pseudotropheus saulosi is a vibrant and popular Malawi cichlid native to Lake Malawi in Africa. Recognised for its striking colours, adult males display a brilliant blue body with yellow fins, while females are more subdued with a yellow-orange hue. Reaching about 8-10cm in length, this species is lively, territorial, and best suited for aquarists with some experience. Itโs a hardy fish that thrives in a well-maintained environment, adding colour and activity to a Malawi setup.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is suitable for a pair or small group, with a sandy substrate, rocks, and caves to mimic their natural rocky habitat. Maintain water temperature between 24-26ยฐC, pH around 7.8-8.6, and soft to moderately hard water. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to keep water quality high, especially as they can be territorial.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Pseudotropheus saulosi pairs well with other peaceful or semi-aggressive Malawi cichlids like Lethrinops or Aulonocara. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive or much larger species that may bully or prey on them. During breeding, they become territorial, so providing ample hiding spots is crucial.
Best Feeding Regime:
Herbivorous; they prefer high-quality vegetable flakes, spirulina pellets, and algae wafers. Supplement with occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water pollution.
