Description
Protomelas sp. “Smilis” is a captivating Lake Malawi cichlid celebrated for its vibrant colours and dynamic behaviour. Recognised for its striking blue body accented with iridescent hues and bold vertical black stripes, it adds a splash of colour to any Malawi setup. Growing up to 12-14cm, this semi-aggressive species is best kept in a spacious tank with plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming areas to mimic its natural rocky habitat. Its active and territorial nature during breeding makes it suited for experienced aquarists who can provide stable water conditions.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 150 litres is recommended for a small group or pair, with sandy substrate, rocks, and caves for territorial boundaries. Maintain water temperature between 24-26°C, pH around 7.8-8.6, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are essential to keep water quality high and reduce stress.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Protomelas sp. “Smilis” pairs well with other similarly sized, semi-aggressive Malawi cichlids such as Lethrinops and Aulonocara. Avoid housing them with overly peaceful or significantly larger fish, which may be bullied or preyed upon. During breeding, they can become highly territorial.
Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; they prefer high-quality pellets or flakes formulated for cichlids, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Occasionally include vegetable matter such as spirulina wafers. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water pollution.
