Description

Melanochromis chipokae is a striking Malawi cichlid renowned for its vibrant blue body and contrasting black markings. Native to Lake Malawi in Africa, this species displays a bold, elongated shape and can reach up to 12-14cm in length. Known for its semi-aggressive and territorial behaviour, it’s an exciting species for experienced aquarists seeking colour and activity in their Malawi setup. During breeding, males become even more aggressive and territorial, so adequate space and hiding spots are essential.

Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 150 litres is recommended for a pair or small group, with sandy substrate and plenty of rocks, caves, and artificial structures to establish territories. Maintain water temperature between 24-26°C, pH around 7.8-8.6, and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and strong filtration are necessary to keep water quality high and reduce aggression.

Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Melanochromis chipokae pairs well with other active, similarly sized Malawi cichlids such as Labeotropheus or Pseudotropheus. Avoid housing them with overly peaceful or much larger species that may be bullied or preyed upon. During breeding, they tend to be territorial and aggressive, so providing plenty of hiding spaces is critical.

Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous but leaning towards herbivory; offer high-quality flakes or pellets designed for cichlids, complemented by live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and spirulina-based foods. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to maintain water quality.
