Water Quality:
The SP500 Maulana thrives in alkaline, well-oxygenated water with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5. A substrate that mimics the sandy and rocky transitional zones of Lake Malawi is ideal, as it provides ample hiding spaces, territorial boundaries, and open swimming areas. High-quality filtration and consistent water changes are crucial in maintaining optimal water conditions for these sensitive fish.
Feeding:
As omnivores, these bicolour peacocks benefit from a varied diet. A balanced feeding regimen includes high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, alongside live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. Incorporating vegetable matter, such as spirulina-based food, not only supports their overall health but also enhances their distinctive colouration. Feeding small amounts twice daily ensures that all food is consumed quickly and does not compromise water quality.
Tank Mates:
The SP500 Maulana Bicolour Peacock is semi-aggressive, yet generally more peaceful compared to other African cichlids. They are best kept with other Peacock Cichlids or similarly sized and similarly tempered species like Haplochromis. To minimise territorial conflicts, maintain a ratio of one male to two or more females, and avoid introducing overly timid or significantly smaller fish that might be harassed.
Sexing:
Sexing these peacocks can be challenging, as both sexes exhibit the bicolour pattern. However, males often display more intense colouration and larger fins, especially as they mature or assert dominance. Females tend to be slightly smaller with more subdued hues. Careful observation, particularly during breeding periods, can aid in distinguishing between the sexes.
Breeding:
SP500 Maulana Bicolour Peacock cichlids are mouthbrooders. During breeding, the female incubates fertilised eggs in her mouth for approximately three weeks until the fry are ready to fend for themselves. Providing flat rocks and open, sandy areas encourages natural spawning behaviour. A stress-free environment with stable water parameters promotes successful breeding and fry survival.
Maximum Size and Longevity:
These cichlids can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) and, with proper care, can live 5 to 8 years. A spacious tank with excellent water quality, thoughtful feeding, and the correct social setup are key factors in ensuring their longevity and sustained vibrant colouration.
Fun Fact:
The unique bicolour display of the SP500 Maulana Bicolour Peacock is a testament to meticulous selective breeding, making it a standout gem in any cichlid collection and a true conversation starter in the aquarium hobby.
