Description
Lepidiolamprologus hecqui, commonly known as Hecqui’s Lamprologus, is a fascinating cichlid native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. Recognised for its striking metallic blue-green body with iridescent sheen and distinctive black markings, it is a smaller, relatively peaceful species, reaching about 10-12cm in length. Its active and territorial nature makes it a captivating addition to a well-maintained aquarium. They are hardy and adaptable but require specific conditions to thrive.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is recommended for a small group or a pair, with rocky structures, caves, and sand substrate to mimic their natural habitat. Stable water parameters are essential, with temperatures around 24-26ยฐC, pH 8.0-9.0, and moderate water flow. Good filtration and regular water changes are vital to maintain water quality.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
They are best kept with other peaceful or similarly sized Tanganyikan cichlids such as Cyprichromis or Altolamprologus. Avoid aggressive or much larger species that might harass or outcompete them. They can be territorial during breeding but generally coexist peacefully with proper tank setup.
Best Feeding Regime:
Lepidiolamprologus hecqui are omnivorous but tend to prefer meaty foods. Offer high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes to prevent water pollution.
