Description
Jacob Peocock, also known as the Cape Maclear Peacock (Aulonocara jacobfreibergi), is a stunning Lake Malawi cichlid celebrated for its vibrant colours and peaceful temperament. Recognised for its shimmering blue and yellow body with striking eye spots and iridescent sheen, this species reaches about 10-12cm in length. Originating from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi, it thrives in environments with plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming space. Its calm, semi-aggressive nature makes it ideal for community setups with compatible species.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is suitable for a pair or small group, with rocky decor, caves, and sandy substrate. Maintain water temperature between 24-26°C, pH 7.8-8.6, and soft to medium hardness. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential for optimal health and colouration.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Cape Maclear Peacocks pair well with other peaceful Malawi cichlids such as Aulonocara species, Lethrinops, or Placidochromis. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive or larger species that might bully or prey on them. During breeding, they become territorial, so ample hiding spots are recommended.
Best Feeding Regime:
They are omnivorous; provide high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. They also enjoy vegetable wafers and spirulina. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water fouling.
