Description
Geophagus balzani, commonly known as the Balzani’s Eartheater, is an attractive freshwater fish native to South America, particularly the Amazon River basin. Recognised for its peaceful nature and distinctive behaviour, it features a sleek, elongated body with vibrant gold and greenish hues, often with subtle red or orange accents. Reaching up to 15-20cm in length, it is a popular choice for community tanks due to its calm disposition and bottom-dwelling habits. The species is known for its unique feeding behaviour, sifting through substrate to find food, which helps maintain tank cleanliness.
Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 200 litres is recommended for a pair or small group, with sandy or fine gravel substrate to mimic their natural environment. Provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and plants. Maintain water temperature between 24-27°C, pH around 6.5-7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. Good filtration and regular water changes ensure optimal health.
Compatibility & Incompatibility:
They are peaceful and do well with other similar-sized peaceful fish such as tetras, Corydoras, and peaceful cichlids. Avoid aggressive or overly active species that may stress or bully them. They are substrate-oriented, so avoid bottom-dwellers that might compete for food.
Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; they thrive on high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. They also enjoy vegetable matter such as spirulina wafers. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water quality issues.
