General Information:

The Galaxy Turquoise Discus is a breathtaking variety of Symphysodon, known for its radiant blue-green body patterned with intricate red striations that shimmer like a star-strewn sky. This selectively bred strain is prized by aquarists for its elegant shape, vibrant colours, and calm, regal swimming behaviour. As a showpiece fish, it thrives in a peaceful, well-maintained aquarium that mimics the soft, warm waters of the Amazon basin.

Species Overview:

  • Species: Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Hybrid variant)

  • Common Name: Galaxy Turquoise Discus

  • Origin: Captive-bred (from South American wild types)

  • Diet: Carnivorous (high-quality pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp)

  • pH Range: 6.0–6.5

  • Temperature: 28–30°C

  • Max Size: 15–18 cm

  • Tank Size: Minimum 250 litres for a group

Water Quality:

Galaxy Turquoise Discus require pristine water conditions to maintain their health and vibrant appearance. Soft, slightly acidic water with stable temperature and minimal fluctuations is ideal. Frequent partial water changes (at least 30% weekly) and strong biological filtration are essential for optimal health.

Feeding:

These discus thrive on a high-protein diet, including quality discus pellets, frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. A varied diet helps enhance their colouration and supports robust immune health. Feed 2–3 times daily in small portions to avoid water contamination.

Tank Mates:

Due to their gentle temperament, Galaxy Turquoise Discus should be housed with other peaceful species that can tolerate similar warm, soft water. Ideal tank mates include cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras, German blue rams, and Corydoras catfish. Avoid aggressive or overly active species that may stress them out.

Sexing:

Sexing discus visually is challenging, especially when young. Males may display slightly larger size, broader foreheads, and more pointed dorsal fins, while females appear rounder and fuller during breeding. Confirming sex is most reliable when paired and observed during spawning.

Breeding:

Galaxy Turquoise Discus form monogamous pairs and are substrate spawners. They lay eggs on flat surfaces, and both parents typically guard and fan the eggs. Once hatched, fry feed on the parents’ mucus secretions for the first few weeks until they can be weaned onto baby brine shrimp.

Maximum Size and Lifespan:

Galaxy Turquoise Discus can grow up to 18 cm and live for 10–12 years when properly cared for. Their social nature means they are best kept in groups of at least five to reduce stress and promote natural behaviours.

Fun Fact:

The shimmering galaxy-like markings on this discus are a result of years of selective breeding, blending wild turquoise lines with radiant red accents to create a truly out-of-this-world display.
