Description

Dimidiochromis compressiceps, commonly known as the Malawi Eyebiter Cichlid, is a striking and unique species native to Lake Malawi in Africa. Recognised for its elongated, torpedo-shaped body and vivid metallic blue-green hues with subtle iridescence, it’s a captivating addition to advanced aquariums. Typically reaching 15-20cm in length, this fish is a semi-aggressive predator and exhibits territorial behaviour, especially during breeding. Its sleek form and vibrant colours make it a stunning focal point, but it requires a well-structured environment to thrive.

Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 250 litres is recommended for a pair, with sandy substrate and plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming areas to establish territories. Maintain water temperature between 24-26°C, with a pH of 7.8-8.6. Ensure stable filtration and frequent water changes to keep water quality pristine, as they are sensitive to poor conditions.

Compatibility & Incompatibility:
They are best kept with other large, semi-aggressive Malawi cichlids such as Julidochromis or Lethrinops. Avoid small, peaceful species that might be bullied or eaten. Aggressive or much larger fish should also be avoided to prevent stress or injury.

Best Feeding Regime:
Carnivorous; they thrive on high-quality pellets or flakes designed for carnivores, supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, krill, and small fish. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water fouling.
