General Information:

The Deepwater Electra, also known as Placidochromis Electra Likoma, is a stunning, graceful cichlid native to the deeper regions of Lake Malawi, particularly around Likoma Island. Known for its shimmering metallic blue-silver body and calm demeanour, this species adds a touch of elegance to any Malawi setup. Males in breeding condition develop a more vibrant blue sheen, especially around the face and flanks.

Species Overview:

  • Common Name: Deepwater Electra

  • Scientific Name: Placidochromis electra “Likoma”

  • Origin: Lake Malawi (Likoma Island)

  • Diet: Carnivorous – enjoys protein-rich diets including krill, mysis shrimp, and quality cichlid pellets

  • pH Range: 7.7–8.6

  • Temperature: 24–28°C

  • Max Size: 18–20 cm

  • Tank Size: 250 litres minimum

Water Quality:

Being a deepwater species, they thrive in well-oxygenated, clean water with stable pH and low nitrates. Provide a soft sandy substrate with open swimming areas and minimal rockwork, reflecting their natural, less-structured deepwater habitat.

Feeding:

Feeds on small invertebrates in the wild. In aquariums, offer a protein-rich diet with occasional spirulina-based food to support colouration and digestion. Avoid overfeeding and remove uneaten food to preserve water quality.

Tank Mates:

Peaceful for a hap, the Deepwater Electra can be housed with other mild-tempered Malawi haps and peacocks. Avoid overly aggressive Mbuna and ensure tankmates are similar in size to prevent bullying or predation. Best kept as a single male with a few females or in a species-only group.

Sexing:

Males exhibit brighter colouration and a more slender body shape, especially as they mature. Females remain silver-grey and more rounded. Males may become territorial when ready to breed, but are otherwise quite docile.

Breeding:

Maternal mouthbrooder. Males display on sandy patches to attract females, and fertilisation occurs externally before eggs are taken into the female’s mouth. Fry are typically released after 21–28 days and can be raised on finely crushed flake food or baby brine shrimp.

Maximum Size and Lifespan:

Reaches up to 20 cm in length and can live up to 8–10 years with proper care. Their calm behaviour and regal appearance make them a prized addition to any Lake Malawi collection.

Fun Fact:

In the wild, they’re often found at depths of 20 metres or more, gliding effortlessly through open water—one of the few cichlids truly adapted for deepwater living.
