Description
Geophagus sveni is a large cichlid species native to Brazil that mostly feeds on soil. With their vibrant blue and red stripes and elongated fin extensions, they are considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing species. All Geophagus species require a sandy substrate since they have a natural inclination to ingest soil. Similar to other Geophagus species, the Sveni will consistently filter sand in order to find nourishment. Aside from their vibrant, orange-red heads, these creatures have a primary hue ranging from tan to grey. They also possess subtle, vertical banding consisting of 8-10 bars, as well as scales on their sides that shimmer in shades of gold to green. Sveni fish exhibit opalescent gold to green patterns on its operculum, along with a spectrum of gold-green to orange-red markings on their translucent fins. In addition, they possess a black ocellus patch situated on and below their upper lateral line. They have a preference for water that is warm, soft, acidic, and clean. Additionally, they like to seek out locations with low or dim lighting in order to search for food. These cichlids have a maximum length of 15-17cm.
Gender inequality
There are not significant disparities between the genders. Male individuals exhibit more vibrant pigmentation and their fins grow elongated streamers.
Temperament and Compatible Tank Companions
Sveni cichlids exhibit a preference for group living and generally display peaceful behaviour. They have shown adaptability in community settings, but they are typically kept in tanks that are either species-specific or designed to mimic their natural habitat (biotope-specific). They can also coexist with other cichlid species. When choosing tank mates, it is important to carefully assess their compatibility and ensure that they are of similar size.
