Description
Origin
Firemouth cichlids, scientifically known as Thorichthys meeki, originate from Central
America. Their natural habitats are calm to moderately flowing waters. Substrates can
consist of sand and mud, also present can be beds of leaf litter and submerged branches.
These cichlids exhibit distinctive coloration, characterised by grey bodies with vibrant red
along the lower region, and their fins also display shades of blue. As Firemouth cichlids
mature, their grey and red coloration typically intensifies, while the blue colour in their fins
becomes more prominent. These cichlids grow to 10-12cm and live for about 10 years
Gender Disparity
Male individuals typically exhibit elongated trailers on their dorsal fins, which facilitates
their identification once they have reached maturity. However, distinguishing between
juvenile individuals may pose some difficulty.
