Description
Veiji Hartwegi, also known as the tailbar cichlid hails from the rivers of Central America. These freshwater fish typically reside in the bottom to middle sections of river valleys and lakes with slow-moving water. They inhabit various substrates such as rocks, silt, sand, or mud, frequently concealing themselves under root tangles. These fish exhibit polymorphism, which is a fascinating characteristic. Based on the morphological data, it has been determined that they exist in two distinct forms. The first form is the usual form of a body shape that is moderately deep and somewhat extended, with a band running along the middle of the side. The other form of Tailbar Cichlid is the rheophilic form, which was recently discovered in the upper reaches of the Grijalva River basin in Mexico. In this form, they lack a mid-lateral band and possess an elongated and slightly deep body shape.
Gender Inequality
Males are larger than females and will display a brighter colouration. Mature males will also develop a nuchal hump.
Temperament and Compatible Tank Companions
The Tailbar cichlid is mildly aggressive towards other species; however, they are very aggressive towards their own.
