Description
The Pearl of Likoma (Pseudotropheus joanjohnsonae). Is exclusively found in Lake Malawi and is specifically native to the rocky habitats surrounding Likoma Island.
Male individuals exhibit a blue coloration, but females display a greenish blue hue adorned with rows of yellowish dots and lustrous gills. They consume crustaceans, insects, and larvae as their primary source of nourishment. Provide a well-rounded diet consisting of both protein-rich and vegetable-based items.
Pearl of Likoma are low-maintenance as long as you can control aggression by including rock formations in a spacious aquarium .
Male individuals exhibit a lack of tolerance towards other males and are also capable of engaging in harassment towards females. Ensure that the tank is sufficiently spacious if you intend to house a collective of 5 or more fish. Additionally, ensure that the tank contains a plentiful amount of rocks. This fish is compatible with other assertive mbuna and larger Malawi Haps.
Spawning this fish was relatively effortless. The challenge lies in maintaining the survival of female individuals for the sake of reproduction, as mentioned earlier, due to aggressive behaviour. The fish reproduce in a manner typical of most mbuna.
The gestation period for the females lasts approximately 2 weeks, and the offspring are of modest size. Feed the juvenile fish with baby brine shrimp initially, and then transition to flake food.
The fry exhibit rapid growth and vibrant colours, which is aesthetically pleasing.
