Description
General Information:
The Lethrinops Mbasi is a beautifully coloured cichlid species originating from Lake Malawi, prized for its shimmering scales and peaceful temperament. Males develop stunning hues of blue, violet, and redโespecially during breeding seasonโwhile females remain more subdued in silver tones. This species is ideal for Malawi show tanks, offering both visual appeal and relatively calm behaviour in comparison to other Malawi cichlids.

Water Quality:
Thrives in clean, hard, alkaline water typical of Lake Malawi. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential for maintaining health and vibrant colouration. Substrate should be sandy to mimic their natural habitat where they sift through sand for food.
Feeding:
Feeds naturally on small invertebrates and detritus by sifting sand. In the aquarium, provide high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, and occasional frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia. Avoid overfeeding and ensure all food is consumed to maintain water quality.
Tank Mates:
Lethrinops Mbasi are relatively peaceful and do well in groups of their own species or with similarly tempered Malawi cichlids. Avoid overly aggressive tankmates like Mbuna or large predators. Keep in groups of one male to several females to reduce aggression and encourage natural behaviour.
Sexing:
Males are larger and significantly more colourful, especially when mature or in breeding condition. Females are smaller, with a uniform silvery-grey appearance. Dominant males often display vivid blues and reds with a metallic sheen.
Breeding:
Mouthbroodersโfemales incubate fertilised eggs in their mouths for approximately 21โ28 days. Provide flat stones or open sandy areas for spawning displays. Fry can be raised on finely crushed flakes and baby brine shrimp.
Maximum Size and Lifespan:
Lethrinops Mbasi can grow up to 15 cm and live 5โ8 years in captivity with proper care. Their graceful swimming and colourful displays make them a popular addition to peaceful Malawi cichlid aquariums.
Fun Fact:
Males perform graceful, circular “dance-like” movements to impress females during courtship, creating visible spawning pits in the sand.
