Description

The Gissel (Haplochromis gisseli), also known as the Gissel cichlid, is a vibrant freshwater fish native to Lake Victoria in Africa. Known for its striking coloration, it displays a stunning mix of bright blue, yellow, and orange hues, often with iridescent scales that shimmer under aquarium lighting. The Gissel is a relatively small species, reaching about 8-10cm in length, and is admired for its active, schooling behaviour. Itโ€™s a hardy fish suited to intermediate hobbyists, provided their tank conditions are well-maintained.

Tank Recommendations:
A minimum of 100 litres is recommended for a small school or a pair, with sandy or fine gravel substrate and plenty of rocks, plants, and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat. Maintain water temperature between 23-26ยฐC, pH around 7.0-8.0, and ensure stable filtration to keep water quality high. Regular water changes are essential.

Compatibility & Incompatibility:
Gissels are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially during breeding. They do well with other small to medium-sized peaceful cichlids like Pseudotropheus or Aulonocara. Avoid aggressive or much larger species that may bully or threaten them.

Best Feeding Regime:
Omnivorous; feed high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, complemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. They also enjoy vegetable matter like spirulina or blanched vegetables. Feed twice daily, only what they can consume within a few minutes to prevent water pollution.
