Description
The Flower Horn Cichlid is a hybrid species of South American cichlids characterized by its prominent and rounded forehead. The Flower Horn has an exceptionally distinctive origin and is not naturally occurring in the wild. This hybrid species was formed through the deliberate cross-breeding of different species of cichlids from Central America by enthusiasts of the cichlid hobby. The origin of the Flower Horn is said to be a result of crossbreeding between a Blood Parrot Cichlid, and other hybrid species of Cichlid. Flower Horns are mostly known for their prominent cranial hump. This anatomical feature is referred to as a nuchal hump or kok, and it is often more prominent in male Flower Horns.
Healthy Flowerhorn should be alert, active and sensitive to their environment. Swimming actively, showing curiosity and interacting with their environment. The maximum size attained by this fish is 30.5cm.
Gender inequality
Distinguishing between male and female Flower Horns might provide a challenge. The prominent cranial protuberance may exhibit more prominence in males, although this characteristic can undergo rapid size variations within a short span, and it is not universally present in all males. Male fish generally exhibit a bigger size compared to females, although this characteristic is influenced by the fish’s genetic makeup and dietary habits.
Characteristics and Compatible Tank Companions
Due to their sometimes combative temperament and substantial physical stature, it is challenging to locate a suitable companion for the Flower Horn fish. An ideal companion for a Flowerhorn is another Flowerhorn, preferably a mated pair. Both males and females have the capacity to display aggression towards members of their own species. A large tank is preferred to accommodate two Flowerhorns.
