Description

The Blue Dolphin Cichlid, scientifically known as Cyrtocara moorii, originates from the Lake Malawi rift lake and adjacent waterways in eastern Africa. Their popular name is derived from the prominent nuchal hump on their forehead and the bill-shaped mouth, which together create a resemblance to a dolphin. These animals are typically found in muddy and sandy coastal regions in the wild, thus it is important to create an aquarium setting that closely mimics their native habitat. Blue Dolphins reach a considerable size and hence necessitate a spacious aquarium of at least 400 litres or more to adequately accommodate adult individuals. These cichlids reach a size of 20-25cm.

Gender Disparity

This species has low sexual dimorphism, making it challenging to determine the sex. Both species display the same blue dolphin nuchal hump and have identical coloration. Male individuals typically have elongated and more tapered dorsal and anal fins in contrast to their female counterparts.

Temperament and Suitable Tank Mates

This cichlid species is generally calm, however, male individuals might exhibit aggression against other males of the same species. The species is polygamous, hence it is optimal to maintain a male-female ratio of at least 1:3. Feasible companions for your tank include Frontosa Cichlids.
