Description
General Information:
The T-bar Cichlid, scientifically known as Amatitlania sajica, is a peaceful and striking species from Central America, known for the distinctive dark “T” shaped bar running vertically and horizontally across its body. With its subtle greenish-gray sheen and gentle temperament, it’s an excellent choice for hobbyists seeking a smaller, manageable cichlid with personality. Its ease of care and tolerance for a variety of water parameters make it ideal for both beginners and seasoned aquarists.
Species Overview:
Common Name: T-bar Cichlid
Scientific Name: Amatitlania sajica
Origin: Central America (Costa Rica)
Diet: Omnivorous
pH Range: 6.5–7.5
Temperature: 22–28°C
Max Size: 10–12 cm
Tank Size: Minimum 100 litres for a pair
Water Quality:
T-bar Cichlids thrive in well-filtered, moderately hard water with stable parameters. While adaptable, they benefit from regular water changes to prevent nitrate buildup. A sandy or fine gravel substrate with hiding places created from rocks or driftwood replicates their natural environment well.
Feeding:
This omnivorous cichlid accepts a wide range of foods, including high-quality flakes, pellets, blanched vegetables (like zucchini or spinach), and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. A balanced diet ensures vibrant colouration and healthy breeding behaviour. Feed once or twice daily in controlled portions.
Tank Mates:
Known for being one of the more peaceful cichlids, the T-bar can coexist with similarly tempered Central American cichlids, tetras, Corydoras, and other non-aggressive species. Avoid pairing with overly aggressive tank mates or very small fish that may be viewed as prey. Ample hiding spots and visual breaks help reduce stress and territorial behaviour.
Sexing:
Mature males are typically larger, with longer dorsal and anal fins, and may exhibit slightly more intense colouration. Females often develop a yellow or orange hue in the belly region, especially when breeding. Venting is the most accurate method to determine sex.
Breeding:
T-bar Cichlids are excellent parents and will readily breed in aquariums. They are substrate spawners, with females laying eggs on flat surfaces like rocks or driftwood. Both parents will fiercely guard their fry, making them a fascinating species for breeding observation.
Maximum Size and Longevity:
They typically reach 10–12 cm in length and can live 8–10 years in well-maintained aquariums. Their hardy nature and endearing behaviour make them a long-term favourite for many aquarists.
Fun Fact:
Despite their small size and gentle appearance, T-bar Cichlids show remarkable parenting instincts—guarding their eggs and fry with surprising intensity and teamwork.
