Description

The Redhump Eartheater is a species of eartheater from freshwater inhabitants in South America. The name of this species is due to its distinctive red hump on its head that adds a pop of colour, in comparison to its brown body. Redhump searches sand for tiny creatures and debris in its native habitat. It will sift sand even when fed prepared food in an aquarium, so you’ll need to supply it with a deep sand bed free of sharp objects or pebbles. This cichlid can reach a maximum length of 10 inches in the wild. However, a maximum length of 6 inches for males and about 5 inches for females is typical for aquarium fish.

Gender Inequality

Redhump Eartheaters can be a challenge to distinguish between male and female, in particular when they are young. Males, on the contrary, tend to have slightly longer fins than females and tend to become more colorful, especially during breeding seasons.

Temperament and Compatible Tank Companions

The Redhump Eartheater is a peaceful species of cichlids which can coexist with many types of fish. However, males can often display aggression to claim territory  when placed with other males, ensure there is enough room for each male to have their own territory in the tank under the circumstances of having more than one male. Male and female may become aggressive to other species in the tank during breeding.
