Scientific Name:
Aulonocara maylandi
Water Quality:
Sulphur Crest Peacocks thrive in clean, hard water with a pH of 7.5–8.5 and temperatures between 24–27°C (75–80°F). Mimic their natural habitat with sandy substrates, rocky hiding spots, and open swimming areas. Weekly water changes and a strong filtration system are vital to keeping them healthy and vibrant.
Feeding:
These cichlids are omnivores, thriving on a mix of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Feed them twice daily in small amounts to maintain their health and enhance their natural yellow crest. Overfeeding can affect water quality, so it’s best to monitor portion sizes.
Tank Mates:
Sulphur Crest Peacocks are peaceful for African cichlids and pair well with other non-aggressive Lake Malawi species, such as Peacocks and Haps. Avoid aggressive Mbuna or smaller fish that may trigger territorial disputes. A well-spaced tank with plenty of hiding spots reduces stress and promotes harmony.
Sexing:
Males are more colourful, showcasing bright yellow crests along with shimmering blue or purple bodies. Females are less vibrant, with a silver base and faint yellow highlights. The males’ colors intensify during breeding as they attempt to attract mates.
Breeding:
Sulphur Crest Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders, with females carrying fertilised eggs in their mouths for about 18–21 days. Provide flat rocks and sandy areas in the tank to encourage spawning. A single male with multiple females is ideal for reducing aggression and boosting breeding success.
Maximum Size and Longevity:
These fish typically grow to 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) and can live up to 6–8 years with proper care. A spacious tank with clean, stable water ensures they remain healthy and active for years.
Fun Fact:
The Sulphur Crest Peacock gets its name from the vivid yellow “crest” on its head, which resembles the bright plumage of a bird!
