Description
General Information:
The Copadichromis Virginalis Gold Crest is a breathtaking cichlid native to the pristine waters of Lake Malawi in Africa. Its shimmering golden hue, paired with striking blue accents on males, makes it a showstopper in any aquarium. This species is peaceful and suitable for both beginner and experienced cichlid enthusiasts.
Scientific Name:
Copadichromis virginalis
Water Quality:
These African cichlids thrive in specific water conditions that mimic their natural habitat. Maintain a pH between 7.8 and 8.5, with water hardness of 10-15 dGH. Keep water temperatures stable between 75-82°F (24-28°C). Regular water changes and excellent filtration are crucial to keep these beautiful fish healthy and vibrant.
Feeding:
This species is an omnivore, enjoying a varied diet of high-quality pellets, spirulina, and occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp or bloodworms. Feed them twice daily in small portions to avoid overfeeding. A balanced diet enhances their radiant colours and overall health.
Tank Mates:
Gold Crest Cichlids are relatively peaceful and pair well with other non-aggressive cichlids or similarly sized tank mates. Avoid housing them with highly territorial or aggressive species. Providing ample hiding spots and swimming space ensures harmony in the aquarium. Ideal tank mates include other Copadichromis species, peaceful Mbuna, and similarly sized Malawi cichlids.
Sexing:
Males are more colourful than females, displaying bright gold bodies with vivid blue highlights, particularly on the face and fins. Females are typically less vibrant, with a silvery or grey tone. Males also develop more pronounced finnage and grow slightly larger than females. Male colours become even more intense during breeding.
Breeding:
These maternal mouth-brooders are relatively straightforward to breed in the right conditions. Provide plenty of rocky hiding spaces and maintain excellent water quality. Females will hold eggs in their mouth for approximately 3-4 weeks before releasing fully formed fry. A dedicated breeding tank with a ratio of one male to several females works best.
Maximum Size and Longevity:
This species grows to about 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) and can live for 8–10 years with proper care. While medium-sized tanks can suffice, larger aquariums with ample swimming areas and decorations are recommended to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Fun Fact:
The male Gold Crest’s colours shine brightest during courtship, transforming them into one of the most visually striking cichlids in any tank!
