Description
General Information:
The Copadichromis virginalis โFirecrestโ is a stunning Haplochromine cichlid from Lake Malawi, admired for its vibrant blue body and fiery red to orange blaze across the head and dorsal region. This graceful swimmer is less aggressive than many other Malawi cichlids, making it ideal for semi-aggressive community setups. Its vivid colours, especially in dominant males, make it a spectacular centrepiece in any well-maintained African cichlid aquarium.

Water Quality:
Firecrests prefer stable, alkaline water conditions with excellent filtration and low nitrate levels. Keep the water clean with weekly water changes and ensure plenty of oxygenation. A sandy substrate with scattered rocks and open swimming space closely mimics their natural environment.
Feeding:
In the wild, they feed on plankton and small invertebrates in open water. In captivity, offer a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, mysis shrimp, and krill to maintain colour and vitality. Feed 1โ2 times daily in small, manageable portions.
Tank Mates:
Compatible with other peaceful to mildly aggressive Haps and Peacocks. Avoid highly aggressive Mbuna or overly boisterous tankmates that may outcompete them for food or stress them. Best kept with one male to multiple females to reduce aggression and encourage natural breeding behaviour.
Sexing:
Males develop intense iridescent blue body tones with a reddish-orange blaze from the nose across the dorsal fin, especially when displaying or breeding. Females are typically silver with faint markings and lack the bright head colouration. Males also grow slightly larger and may become more territorial.
Breeding:
Copadichromis virginalis is a maternal mouthbrooder. Males dig shallow spawning pits and display to attract females, who then carry the fertilised eggs in their mouths for around 21 days. After release, the fry can be fed powdered fry food or crushed pellets in a separate grow-out tank.
Maximum Size and Longevity:
Males can grow up to 18 cm, while females remain slightly smaller. With proper care, they can live for 8โ10 years, rewarding keepers with years of colour and activity.
Fun Fact:
The โFirecrestโ variant gets its name from the flame-like coloration across its forehead, making it one of the most sought-after Copadichromis for show tanks.
